Hei Suomi!

Dietgirl Finland Hello world! I know some folks get annoyed when I write about Book Stuff but I assure you this is the very last Dietgirl translation and it would be rude to give shoutouts to Germany and Norway then ignore poor old Finland

So… hello any Finns out there! I've already heard from some lovely DieettitytΓΆn huimat seikkailut readers (thank you!) who said they particularly appreciated the passionate love story. Not Gareth, but rather Finnish chocolate.

It was a brief but intense affair – just three days in Helsinki almost five years ago. But I still wake up drooling from Fazer chocolate dreams, especially the Tupla and Geisha bars. I think the chocolates got more adjectives in the book than poor Dr G.

Apart from the chocolate and the reindeer with mashed potatoes, my other lingering memory of Helsinki is of wind. Not the excess-broccoli-consumption kind, but rather the wild stuff that blows things over. I was still in my Avoiding Cameras phase back then so the only photographic evidence I've got is a self-portrait beneath the Sibelius Monument that still makes Dr G bust a gut laughing. A ferocious Finnish breeze is all you need for a stunning Flock of Seagulls hairstyle.

Finland

The book looks very cool – hardcover with lots of vowels. The acknowledgements are slightly confusing. In the UK version, I thanked Gareth in the last paragraph and ended with, "YOU RAWK" – the Finnish translation of this sentence is "SENKIN LIVERPOOL-FAN!" Very strange!

(Thank you Meri for your help with the entry title!)

  3. Finn delurking here. Love your blog! πŸ˜€

Oh Tupla! I miss Finnish chocolate so much since I moved away, my family has to send me some every now and then. The only thing that beats Tupla is PΓ€tkis *drool*. Don’t know if you tried it. I’d send you some if I could, because it’s just too good.

    Ok, back to lurking.

  4. I love hearing about the book stuff. The people who complain are probably just jealous that they don’t have books featuring themselves as superheroes on the cover.

  5. Wow, that is so great that your book is out in so many different countries. What an achievement, Congratulations! I just recently finished your book and wanted to tell you that it inspired me! I absolutely loved how personal it was, I feel like I know you so well. There were many things that you mentioned in your book that even reminded me of myself. Thank you for putting that book out for all to read. It helps me stay focused with my own weight issues and helps keep me thinking positively. =)

  6. Greetings from Finland!

I just finished reading your blog from the beginning so this post is good place for first comment. πŸ™‚ I saw your book at the local supermarket a while ago and instead of buying it immediately, I decided to check your blog first. Then I got hooked, and now I think I have to read the book in English too because I love the way you write… And that Liverpool-fani thing didn’t really convince me of the quality of the translation either. πŸ˜‰ We’re visiting London next month so I think I’ll have to wait and try to find the book from there, even though it makes me feel quite impatient at the moment.

But now it’s time to try to get some sleep, it’s almost 3 am and it’s going to be a difficult start for a work week tomorrow… I just couldn’t stop before I had finally read all the older posts.

I don’t even know what to say, except thank you for writing the blog, it gives lots of food for thoughts!

  7. “I know some folks get annoyed when I write about Book Stuff”. Serious? How odd, do they understand it is your blog? Book-blog away I say!
    xx

peeess.. going to Dickson Asian Noodle house tonight for anniversary dinner… will think of you!

  8. Your book is making the rounds all over the world! And now I’m reminded how much I enjoyed it. I think I need to read it again. For the third (fourth?) time. Hehe.

  9. Me too, I LOVE (seconding the capitals n’all) hearing about your book. I feel like I know someone who’s written a book… “know” being a very generous description but you get the gist. Surely there are more translations yet to come?

  10. Ditto on the lurve!

I’ve always wanted to see Finland. I remember reading somewhere that they have a 100% literacy rate! Now that I know about the chocolate, it’s all the more reason to visit.

  11. How can anyone complain about the book! Keep writing about the book — we love hearing about your virtual travels as you are translated around the world.

  12. I am confused by the Liverpool-fan part… is that the only kind of rocking that you can do in Finland? WHY?

  13. mate…you’ve become universal!!!!

now persuade your publishers for a greek copy!
    I could do your translation!!!!

  14. Hei Shauna/Dietgirl!

Im from Finland and bought the finnish copy of your book yesterday, and it is truely Unputdownable, I stayed up the whole night reading until the book was finished!

And embarassing to say as a Finn, but I figured out the “RAWK” translation in to a “Liverpool-fani”. Go to Google and type “rawk”, what you find is a Liverpool fan site “Red And White Kop” What a dumb mistake from the translator! πŸ™

Now I want to get the book in English as well since I want to be sure nothing more was lost in translation πŸ™‚

  15. Hi!

IΒ΄m from Finland and just want to thank you for your book Shauna. You know how difficult it is to be overweight and live in country with all Fazer chocolates!! I try to diet but itΒ΄s hard!!

  16. Hi Shauna!

I also want to thank you for amazing book! My favorite chocolate bar from fazer is Fazerina chocolate bar. It is very good. You should taste it! πŸ™‚

    Salla from Finland

  17. Hei hei Finnish folks! thank you very much for reading the book, it means a lot. And thank you Heidi for clearing up that RAWK business πŸ™‚

Salla – I’m sad to say I didn’t get to try Fazerina! I will have to go back someday soon πŸ™‚

  19. Only now I see this! πŸ˜€ Superduper thing that you’re doing your thing also in English <3 Can't wait to get da book!

And Fazer DOES know what it's doing... πŸ˜› Even tho personally I'm more of a dark chocolate type but they have some excellent that too. And alllll the classics.... For us Finns, hopefully for you, too πŸ™‚

Anyway, take care and continue taking over the world O_O I'm so buying this book for presents πŸ˜›
