Almond Butter Hunt

Does anyone know of good purveyors of almond butter in the UK?

I bought three jars of Trader Joe's Crunchy Unsalted back in my suitcase from NYC and I'm onto the second jar already! I'm rationing it carefully but dreading the day when it's gone.

I could grind my own again but the little food processor would probably explode from the strain. The UK brands I've tried (Meridian, Biona) have a grainy, uninspired texture but the Trader Joes has fantastic stabby chunks of almond in it. God bless America. Sniff sniff.

  1. That’s nice of you to offer Ally! But you should save the room for your own treats… tasty tasty America has so much to offer 🙂 i would love to go live there for awhile for a change of scenery.

  3. Holland and Barrett have some, as do Wholefoods in Kensington in London. Might be the same brands you’ve already tried though! 🙂 Gotta love Trader Joe’s. I loved their Better N Peanut Butter. SO good.

  4. Have you tried processing the available UK brands further? It might give you the smoothness you want without defeating the food processor.

  5. @bridmw – great idea but i’m a crunchy gal – i love the crunch of the TJs stuff… it has really lovely slivery bits of almond in it, whereas the UK brands are kinda grainy and smooth 🙂

@PQ – ooh thanks! i might have to take you up on that 🙂

  7. Shauna,
Would you believe that I live in the US and have never even been to Trader Joe’s. Well, now I must make it a point to go there. I live in CT and have never even been to NYC! Considering how much you love visiting the city (and riding a bike over the Brooklyn Bridge), I feel ashamed for not having made the effort to go there, yet.

My visits to Trader Joe’s and NYC are long overdue.

  8. I’ll send you some from Trader Joe’s if you want… I live just down the street from one!

  9. Hi Shauna,

I read your ‘making my own peanut butter’ bit a wee while ago and see you nearly killed your food processor so thought you might like to try an alternative.
I live in Glasgow and there’s a great wholefoods shop called Grassroots. They do jars of almond butter, but better still they have a wondrous machine that grinds fresh peanut butter. The peanuts go in the top, you press a magic button and, after much clunking around you collect the goodies in a cup at the bottom. Genius! I’m sure they’d post some to you as you’re just on the other side of Scotland…
Here’s their website with contact details:

    Enjoy!

    PS – LOVED the book.

  10. Being in New Zealand, I’m not in any situation to be able to help but …..

Have you tried Cashew Butter? It is divine!!!!!!!

  11. I’ll send you more Trader Joe’s groceries! Better yet, I’ll bring ’em over myself. I used to bring Thin Mints (Girl Scout cookies) to my friend in Amsterdam every year.

  12. How about splitting the difference? Get some of the creamy jarred stuff, and process in your own whole almonds to get a chunky texture?

Or get really old school and have a serious workout with a mortar and pestle. 🙂

  13. I was gonna say make your own….

which is what I do, but as you say, it takes bloomin ages and is really very cruel to your food processor. Adding a bit of mild olive oil (or almond oil, even better) seems to make the processing a little bit easier but it’s still a pain.

Report back if you find something!

  14. Shauna – I love TJs. They are all around me!! I will gladly send you some. Just let me know – Ellen

  15. Is this something else I could send in the package???? 😀 With maple butter too… garlic butter… salted butter… unsalted butter…. shrimp butter… (I watch WAY too many movies, clearly)

  16. Hi Shauna,

    Thought you might like to see this;

    link to guardian.co.uk

a fab article by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall from yesterday’s Guardian, which includes several nutty recipes, including one for making your own nut butter (although oil is involved I’m afraid), plus a mouthwatering looking Peanut Butter and Chocolate Tart. Packed with calories, I’m sure, but as Hugh says, a little goes a long way. His Almond Butter Smoothie looks pretty tasty, too!

He also mentions that http://www.detoxyourworld.com sell some lovely looking organic raw almond butters; choose from ‘white’ or ‘whole’.

  17. Yeah, I saw that too, Lucy, and my first thought was ‘nah, can’t be coincidence, he MUST be reading Shauna’. He bloody ought. Hi Hugh!

  18. Thank you very much kind folks volunteering to send some over! I will try and find something locally to save some pennies but if I come begging to your inboxes soon you’ll know my quest has failed 🙂

@Chirpeechick – Thank youuuuu! I’m in Dunfermline so the Weege is only an hour on the bus, I will definitely check out that shop next time I’m over 🙂

@Jules – I’ve not tried cashew butter but it sounds excellent!

@Lucy & Donalda – thanks for the link… how good does that tart look!? Yummo.

  19. You mean God bless the Germans? 😀 The TJs at least used to be owned by a German family, who also have the Aldi chain in Europe. There are some TJ products available in Aldi shops (you have some in the UK as well, I think), though I really don’t know about that almond butter…

  20. Miss Shauna.. did you ever find the Almond Butter here? I could totally go some of it right now.. even though I’ve never tried it, EVERYONE is talking about it in weight loss land AND I WANT SOME.
