Bubble and Squeak
July 14, 2008
Tonight I went to my pal V's house to practice kickboxing in her back yard. When she called up with the invitation I automatically said, I caaaan't. But then I remembered - no Moonwalking, no DIY... I'm free! I'm freeeeee! I dropped to my knees, Tim Robbins in Shawshank style.
We were joined by fellow kickboxing fiend H, and the three of us literally kicked each others arses in the fading light while Max the Dog growled at nothing in particular.
The love affair with kickboxing grows hotter every day. I'm clobbering people in my dreams. I've added in another class too, more advanced and full of intimidating fighter chicks. But it's like what Gareth says to me when I don't want to order in restaurants because I worry they won't understand my accent, "It's good for your development!"
. . .
Things that don't make much sense
#1 - How I can persuade myself to go for walks lasting up to eight consecutive hours, yet at the end of every working day I struggle to walk eight seconds to the kitchen to wash my revolting coffee mug.
#2 - How I have a website with my weight posted on it and a book with my weight written in it, yet I run away screaming when invited to a WiiFit Gathering because I don't want everyone seeing my BMI.
. . .
Dudes, we have CARPET! After bare chipboard for nine months, every step now feels like we're bouncing on the moon. It's added a pleasant dimension to the 100 PushUps Challenge; it smells fantastic when I collapse to the deck. Only downside is I have to re-learn how to be cautious with wine and beetroot.
We also have a COUCH! Although I kind of miss the fold-up camping chairs, the way they make you stink like an Arbroath Smokie.
. . .
I also unpacked the new scanner that we've had for three months, which means I've finally scanned my List of Dinners
as some folks kindly requested. You'll see it's a total dog's breakfast but it's purely designed to jog my memory when doing the weekly meal planning, because I always forget what the options are.
Note: "Dr. G Soup" is a recipe that Gareth devised. I haven't chopped him up and turned him into soup.
. . .
Rhiannon and I were in the queue at H&M yesterday when a girl came over and asked politely, "Are you Shauna Reid?"
I tell you what, my heart hammered ninety to the dozen. Have I stolen something by mistake? Have I parked illegally? But I don't even have a car!
Then she said, "I read your blog!" My face burned and words deserted me and I think I might have said something really stupid. But I did manage ask the lovely lass her name. It was Sarah and she said she has a blog too.
HELLO Sarah, if you're out there! Thank you for saying hi! I'm sorry for being a gibbering fool. I was just a wee bit embarrassed because I knew when you came over I had truly slovenly posture and a surly I Am So Over This Shopping Trip expression. If I'd been more organised I would have been doing bicep curls with those 6-pack socks they always have at the checkouts, to be more inspirational blogger-like!
I'm Shauna Reid, Scotland-dwelling Aussie

This must surely be the first time I've come here and there are no comments ahead of me - at least, while I'm typing that's so. And I haven't got a damned thing to say. D'OH!

Hi Shauna,
Just to let you know I've included a link to your blog today in my latest blog entry (all about goal weights, realistic and unrealistic) -- sort of slightly relates to your "Things that don't make sense" item number 2 as well (the ridiculous BMI charts)!
Best wishes,
Sharon

Ooh, WiiFit is really fun. You should go.

I'm with you on the lazy thing - I've taken to wearing my sports bra to work because changing bras is such an effort!

Omg kathryn, I'm so glad I'm not the only one!

And the above is another example of the lazy. I have the energy to put italics tags around my text, but am too lazy to drag my mouse cursor down to the second line to copy the text? I mean, WHAT?

Hi Shauna,
I had a good laugh reading you last post - a true Diet Girl Adventure!
I think your next book could be the recipes for your "list of dinners"... Add a few of your Diet Girl anecdotes = gold mine!
And wow, first seeing your book on the shelves now being recognised in the street!

You have entered the land of the celebrety blogger

Hee! I think I've had a similar reaction to Wii stuff, although more along the lines of 'omg they'll see how crap I am at this.'
And I'm crap because I never play it. Duh.

HI DG
Saw you comment on my blog the other day. I'm alive but I've cut down my online life because my real life is too busy to cope with the pressure anymore. I'll probably take down my blog when can be bothered. And yours is the ONLY blog I read now.
Actually - I know you are a busy woman (job/exercise/relationship/book/anything else?) perhaps you could give a tip on how you keep all the plates spinning? It feels to me like something always drops - the last month it was exercise! I just didn't get to the gym.
And one other request - recipe for chickpea and spinach curry? I always have those things in the flat and that sounds great.

I have Wii paranoia too! All my friends keep having Wii parties and I'm too embarrassed to go!
Good luck on the fame thing - you'll be in the SPOTTED section in Heat magazine in no time :0)

Damn BMI! You may also maintain the diatribe against BMI... bloody Belgian Mathematician Idiocy -- thats what it truly stands for. grumblegrumble
ps. hi :) um... what are "roast veg & SNAGS?" :D
13 · Posted by Cat · July 14, 2008 at 11:09 AM
Cat - SNAGS is Australian for sausages! Hehehe.
Sandra - glad to know you're alive! i'll find that recipe for you, think i have it scanned!
as for the spinning plates i am terrible at it right now and just want to hide under the duvet every morning. i have a sort of Minimum Service Level agreement in my head and if i am really really snowed under i have kind of "not ideal, but better than nothing" stuff... like if one week all i can do is one 20 minute circuit DVD or pushups in front of the telly or one lunchtime walk then so be it. will think more about that one :)

Hey I was just wondering on your list of dinners, was that "Toad in hole" I saw on the second page?? Or are my eyes deceiving me? And what is that? Hee hee. Yeah you should make a recipe book
17 · Posted by dietgirlismyhero · July 14, 2008 at 12:12 PM
Rhi is up visiting? Cool.
As you well know, you're not the only one who gets a bit flustered when they meet blog-people in real life...
18 · Posted by K · July 14, 2008 at 12:28 PM
Toad in the Hole is an English dish; I made it with vegetarian sausages! Only done it the one time coz I'd never tried it and wanted to see what it was all about! Very tasty albeit a wee bit stodgy...
Aww K, you seemed cucumber cool to me :)

Wii Fit is great fun - but it's only worth the money if you have the time to commit to it at least a few times a week. Kickboxing sounds like a much more exciting way to exercise though!

Great site! I love kickboxing, we do it in the Boot Camp class that I take.
21 · Posted by Mark Salinas · July 14, 2008 at 03:21 PM
Kickboxing sounds great. And I'm guilty of the same thing of doing loads of exercise and then not being bothered to clean a few dishes- its just so much EFFORT:)

Yay kickboxing, yay carpet (I love that new carpet smell, same with paint), yay Your So Famous People Come Up To You at The Store! =)

#1: Hilarious, and oh, so true. Sometimes I take a day off of traditional working out to clean. I attept to convince myself that it's as fun as gym and even put on good tunes, but I always end up on the couch. Darn DVR.
#2: I'm terrified of the Mii that your BMI determines. I can deal with the number, it's healthy, but I don't want to see the little Wii person bloated at all. And I even tout myself as someone who doesn't care about all that ish! That'll show me! ;)
24 · Posted by Jenn · July 15, 2008 at 04:36 PM
I would just like to say that a) I love this site! and b) I just started the 100 pushups challenge thinking I'd be OK since I was a state swimmer in HS. Nope. I am officially pathetic.

I have my weight under a password on Wii Fit. :D I don't even want my husband to see it. Even tho he sees me nekkid!

I like your handwriting. Also, pitta pizzas are the business. I forget what "normal" pizza tastes like now.

Ive been reading your blog for a little while and it is very inspirational. I have been playing with my weight on and off for years. Also wanted to say high from Oz (Adelaide actually).

Shauna - i was taught to make Toad in the Hole from my ex mother in law who is from Yorkshire. To stop the 'stodginess' just add enough milk to make a thin paste and then top up with water until the right consistency. Yummo!!!
