Freshly Baked

This weekend at Cow Poo Manor: a fresh delivery…

… accompanied by a strong breeze which wafted right through our kitchen window. It was just the ticket for a hangover.

(ETA: The Pile is about 300 metres from the house – this was the first time I'd ever caught a whiff!)

I read an interview with Matt Lucas of Little Britain fame where he said, "If I never drank alcohol again I wouldn’t be in the least bothered… You could be spending your money on crisps, couldn’t you?"

I feel exactly the same about booze. And yet I ended up quietly rat-arsed on vodka when I met the lovely former House of Sport colleagues on Friday night (if any of you are out there, HELLO! It was rockin to see you). I got home just as Gareth arrived back from a thrash metal gig. He said he was hungry so I said, "I KNOW, chips and curry sauce!"

Next thing it's 2AM and we're watching Twenty20 Cricket highlights and I'm waxing lyrical about how good chips and curry sauce and fried rice are together; how I was a fool to mock Gareth for the combination all those years ago; how the nubbly texture of the rice balanced the slop of the sauce; how it was oh so wrong but somehow right… this is why I don't drink very often; it always leads to trouble.

Then Saturday 1PM; finally functional enough to make some vegetarian sausage rolls…

Whoops, conjoined.

Tastes amazingly sausage-like but no animal parts here whatsoever… just nuts, oats, herbs, breadcrumbs, etc – recipe here at Green Gourmet Giraffe. Best sausage roll ever! Aside from Cornucopia Bakery in Braddon, Australian Capital Territory, OZ.

Next up: stumbling around garden, giddy at first sign of actual tomatoes.

Currently the size of your pinky fingernail!

Also a sudden glut of roses out front that we have no idea how to look after, in the most daggy coral colour that reminds me of old ladies I have known.

Then we headed off to Carnoustie to see more good friends and their herd of children and dog. Went for a walk and got chased by frothing German Shepherds. Then curry – proper; not the drunken chip kind. Then almost falling asleep into a glass of wine.

Today, a kayaking party at the lake for two of the kids' birthday. I didn't partake because I cannot kayak for shit. I know you have to do it more than once to improve but I choose not to improve with ten eight-year-olds as witnesses!

Then we had a BBQ. Then the kidlets toasted marshmallows and when they ran out of marshmallows they just toasted anything they could find. So here we have a delightful fusion on a stick: strawberry, cherry tomato, cocktail pork sausage and a Terry's Chocolate Orange segment.

Now salad and leftover snag roll then BED. Hope you all had a good weekend!

  1. They say when you live on (or near) a cow farm you eventually get used to the smell. You’ll have to let me know if that ever happens at Cow Poo Manor.

I hate the texture of sausage but those rolls look pretty interesting. I’ll have to try them.

That kabob mixture doesn’t look very appetizing. Didn’t the orange chocolate melt right off?

  2. That sounds like an absolutely perfectly balanced weekend πŸ™‚
except for the chips and friend rice and curry – I read your last post a couple of times and TRIED to like the sound of it but I just can’t!!! Ewww!!
You look after roses by cutting as many as you like and having bunches everywhere so your house smells beautiful

  3. Amazingly this was the first time I’d ever smelled the pile! It’s about 300 metres from the house – I’m zoomed right in πŸ™‚

As for the kebab she managed to yoink it off the BBQ before the choccie melted!

LBTEPA – It’s not something you’d ever contemplate sober πŸ™‚

  4. Wow- what success you’ve had with weight loss…I just found your blog…good luck- I can’t wait to keep reading!

  5. Mmmmm…. sausage rolls….. they look gooood!

That’s a lot of poo – but does your house always come up smelling of roses? πŸ™‚

  6. You were very lucid for being ‘quietly rat-arsed’, you you were being very complimentary about my photos!
House of Sport all say hello!!

  7. @Andy – I was lucid then but not lucid falling up the stairs when I got home. Oh and I genuinely like your photos, it wasn’t the vodka talking πŸ™‚

    @Angie – thank you πŸ™‚

    @Melanie – let’s lead the Daggy REVIVAL!

@Lucy – Hehe nice one. I think I might need to go up there and nick a barrowful to keep the roses looking good.

  8. ooh, sausage rolls look good! and being conjoined only makes them extra special…

  9. Shauna – ignore the soon to be removed comment from toadelf, it smacks of someone who is clearly jealous they have not managed to lose any weight!!

Those sausage rolls look yum btw – even with no meat! (staunch carnivore here…)

  10. Shauna, I found your blog via SparkPeople and have spent the past few months reading every single archive entry in my spare moments. What a wonderful read it has been! I laughed! I cried! I was almost sorry to have caught up to the present, because now I have to wait several days for new posts instead of reading it like a book. Your writing captures and expresses eloquently so many emotions and experiences I have felt myself. It was like having a great, trusted friend. So few writers can do that. PLEASE keep writing.

I was stunned to read the nasty comment from toadelf, but upon Googling “toadelf”, I found a very sad, angry blog about alcoholism and mental illness that explained where she was coming from. I find it hard to believe that anyone who reads your writing wouldn’t love you!

Thanks for the food pics and recipes and links to other healthy blogs; they give me inspiration. I’m going to try a nut roast soon. Keep sharing, and don’t feel like you have to be cheery. I loved the raw, honest entries best; they kept me going, knowing I’m not alone in the struggle to stay healthy and not eat compulsively. It IS a struggle, too, if your brain is wired for addiction (like mine).

  11. g’day

just surfed on in and wanted to say great site and nice pics especially the cow poo one

and too funny on the pimping comment above, I get it all the time – like I spend all this time to get a niche interactive audience to have some twit leaving their business links for their enterprises all over my comments section, rant rant

  12. Thanks for hot tip on veggie sausage rolls – recipie logged and look forward to being enjoyed!

hmmm, chips and curry sauce WITH rice – I can easily see how this is a 2am treat, afterall, I am from the land of the Pie Floater!

What a great Blog you have – been viewing from afar for a long time – so thanx

  13. mmm chips and sausage rolls and toasted marshmallows – that photo makes me want to bake sausage rolls – I agree they are some of the best ever (thanks for the link) – loved having a stash of them in the freezer last time I baked them – but just used the rest of my puff pastry tonight – must must buy more

  14. I want that last kebab!

Never had a sausage roll, meat or otherwise, so I’m copying down that recipe.

I thought you were just joking about the Poo Pile! I thought you’d photoshopped a giant wad of crap into the picture. Oh well, that must be why you have such beautiful roses.

  15. Toadelf/Pig – Please quit with the abusive comments. As for your unanswered email, I can’t say if I’ve responded or not as you haven’t left an email address or a proper name.

Also, I’ve clearly stated on my contact page that I can’t respond to all messages. There’s about 300 unanswered in the inbox right now and it is physically impossible to keep up. I am not up my own arse – I have a full time job and this website is just a hobby.

  16. OH I should have added thanks everyone else for the non-flaming comments. And very nice to meet you, Pauline!

  17. Hmmm my mind just jumped off in a totally odd direction…. vege ‘sausage’ rolls and curry sauce sounds REALLY good to me.

I need to know more about this curry sauce that I hear is so good on hot chips. I tried to find some here but all I could find was a kind of green curry stuff that had to be kept in the fridge. It didn’t taste good with chips πŸ™ LOL

Lovely entry as always Shauny. I like the reports on “everyday” stuff… like getting quietly rat arsed and eating food purely for the love of it… it’s good to know that things get ‘normal’ again at the end of the journey πŸ™‚

  18. Those veggie sausage rolls look delightful! And I say life it too short not to imbibe a good quantity of alcohol every once in a while… πŸ™‚

  19. What a small owrld I was at that bakery only yesterday eating… you guessed it! What a msall world it is. And I used to lived in Scoltand for a few years too!

  20. I’m so jealous of all of your dirt. My little pots on the balcony are so sad in comparison. Although, it is nice having herbs, a handful (ok, more like half a handful) of tiny red tomatoes and the single bell pepper that’s slowing growing right out on my balcony. πŸ™‚

I think you need to pick a bouquet of your old lady roses, dress Gareth up in a frilly hat and have a proper tea party. Hee hee!!

You could serve sausage rolls. They look totally yummy. Just watch out! They look like they could be rough on white gloves!

  21. Hey DG! I’ve had a bit of dieting luck these days (-4lbs) and I credit your Mothership – “If you don’t want an apple, you’re not really hungry then are you?” I delay lunch until I’m “Apple Hungry” and it eliminates morning boredom snacking plus fills me up with a nutritious apple. Thought I’d share!

  22. mmmm cornucopia *drool*
But your veggie sausage rolls look pretty darn delish!!!

  23. Shauna, those sausage rolls have unleashed a beast in me! I made 6 the day I saw the post and a week and a half later I have made a further 12! They are gorgeous!!!! Even my carnivorous fiance loves them!

  24. @Lily – you lucky girl! I hope it was tasty πŸ™‚

@nicole – I’ve always wanted to host a tea party, i totally should do it, gloves and all! or maybe one glove in memoriam of michael jackson.

@lauren – well done comrade! the mothership, she is wise.

@clare – ooh glad they worked out well! apparently you can freeze them too so you could build up a nice stash!
